One of the more interesting aspects about coming back to a gig after several years is cleaning up the messes… that you made 10 years ago.
One more than one occasion, I have found myself looking at how something was organized, or set up, or whatever, and wondering “Who in the world decided this was a good idea?”
Me. Well, past-me to be specific. I thought it was a good idea.
And at the time, it probably (hopefully) was the right idea. But, as a wise man once said (a wise Batman), “Things change.”
This is not a dig at those who came before us. This is not saying that we are smarter about how we do things now. This is about not holding your own work sacred.
Trends come and go. Project delivery needs evolve. Certainly, technology today is not the same technology that it was ten years ago.
Don’t spin your wheels reevaluating every single decision every year, but it’s critical to be open to feedback and be willing to throw out the work you did in the past for something better now… and it might need to be thrown out in another 5 years.
